Causes of sleep apnoea in people with multiple sclerosis

Brief summary

This is an observational study. Participants are asked to come in for one overnight sleep study. In the evening there several sensory tests will be performed, before the participant goes to sleep . Participants are instrumented with a standard polysomnography set-up (including EEG, and EMG electrodes), nasal mask, pressure catheters and intramuscular fine wires in the tongue to measure tongue activity. The aim is to improve our understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of sleep apnoea in people with MS.

 

Inclusion criteria

– Adults between 18 and 65 years with a confirmed diagnosis of MS
-Diagnosis of sleep apnoea (with apnoea/hypopnea index >10 events/hour

Exclusion criteria

– Relapse in the past month
– Cardiovascular disease
– Neurological disorders other than MS
– Pregnant or breast-feeding
– History of oropharyngeal surgery
– Current smoker
– Intellectual or mental impairment or any condition that may interfere with the ability to provide informed consent
